Assemblymembers Laird and Caballero Call on Republicans to Put an End to the California Budget Stalemate
In this week’s Democratic weekly radio address, Assemblymembers John Laird (D-Santa Cruz) and Anna Caballero (D-Salinas) call on Republican legislators to reverse their pledges to not raise any new revenues. They say Republican compromise with Democrats and the governor is crucial to ending the budget stalemate.

Hello, this is Assembly Budget Chair John Laird.
As your representatives in Sacramento, Democrats share the frustration many Californians are feeling about our delayed state budget.
Unfortunately, Republican legislative leaders refuse to offer a budget proposal and level with Californians about the need for new revenues in order to protect vital services.
While unpopular with some, raising limited new revenues from those who can most afford it is the only responsible way to ensure affordable healthcare for the most vulnerable Californians and needed funding for our schools, firefighters, police and the fight against global warming.
Governor Schwarzenegger continues to work with Democrats to build a sensible budget, and recently reversed his pledge to veto the most pressing legislation until a budget is passed.
Now it’s time for Republican legislators to reverse their pledge to not raise any new funding for the services Californians rely on.
Making these pledges may have seemed like a good way to get elected, but with critical services hanging in the balance Republicans need to understand how damaging making $15 billion in cuts would be.
By proposing to drastically cut Medi-Cal reimbursement rates, for instance, we can expect more and more doctors to refuse to take patients who rely on Medi-Cal to afford health insurance.
Cut too deep in areas such as transportation or schools and you run the risk of severely crippling California’s economy today, as well as the potential for growth in the future.
While Democrats have proposed making targeted cuts to these areas, on top of the $9-billion already cut earlier this year, the time has come for a reality check.
